The car seems to be pretty well-known as a special-bodied 1947 Aprilia ordered by Bartali. Pinin Farina also built a coupé version.

I think the gent telling the story got his dates mixed up and simply jumped to (wrong) conclusions.
Regarding the similarities with the XK120... well, yes, they are striking. But talking about late 40s Jaguar and Pinin Farina as “the big guys” and “the little guys”, respectively, seems to indicate rather scant knowledge about both.
Late addition: the car is magnificent.

I know which version I would believe between “wealthy athlete commissions a one-off convertible” versus “Lancia and Pininfarina collaborated to let this guy know that they knew he was protecting Jews by giving him a car several years after the fact.”
I had never heard of Bartali and his really incredible story. It seems like he kept it secret until relatively recently as well.
